As I detail in an article I published elsewhere, Omicron is an unfortunate new reality of the pandemic. However, there are reasons to be optimistic. Despite the new variant being highly infectious, existing COVID measures have helped as the death rate is quite a bit lower than last year. While the variant can more easily affect individuals who are fully vaccinated and boosted, evidence suggests that being vaccinated still offers protection against severe disease.

As I have echoed multiple times on Medium and on my publications, vaccines remain among the most effective deterrents against getting seriously sick from SARS-CoV-2. By this point, everyone should have received their vaccines, ideally with boosters as well. It is the best way to protect yourself and to do your part towards overcoming the pandemic so we have a less dangerous new normal.
